Post Description
Orchestra Baobab were one of the great Senegalese dance bands of the 1970s. They mixed easy-going Cuban influences and local styles in the days before Youssou N'Dour and his more energetic m'balax songs shook up West Africa. Six years ago they came back into fashion with the rerelease of their early 1980s songs, Pirates Choice, and the band then reformed to record their glorious Specialist In All Styles, promoted with some rousing live shows.
We're still waiting for a follow-up, but in the meantime here is an intriguing set from their glory days in the 1970s. A couple of songs will be familiar from the Specialist album - the original, less sophisticated versions of the salsa-based Jin Ma Jin Ma and On Verra Ca - while other tracks chronicle the way the band gradually absorbed different Senegalese influences. But this is not recommended only to music historians - it's a charming dance album.
