Mikis Theodorakis, the famous Greek composer, was born on the Greek island of Chios on July 29, 1925. He wrote numerous ballets, operas, cantatas, and symphonies. He also composed film scores, the most famous being for the film “Zorba the Greek” in 1964. In World War II he became a resistance fighter. During the fascist dictatorship in Greece starting in 1967 he again went into the underground. After the fascist government ended he became a member of parliament and also served as the general music director of the symphony orchestra and chorus of Hellenic Radio and Television
