Williams made an early mark with her 1988 LP Passionate Kisses, the title track of which became a hit for Mary-Chapin Carpenter. She didn't follow up for four years until 1992's Sweet Old World, and then again six years later with 1998's Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Three albums in the ten years from her breakthrough. But she was dropping breadcrumbs in the form of B-sides, appearances on compilations, tribute albums and contributions to her friends' releases.

This disc pulls together a number of "loose ends and scattered songs" that she placed on compilation albums, the albums of friends,and the B-sides of her own EPs. Live takes of her own songs accompany covers of Bob Dylan, Victoria Williams, Woody Guthrie and Merle Haggard, as well as contributions to albums by Chris Gaffney, Terry Allen and Steve Earle.
