Hasse Bruniusson biography
HASSE BRUNIUSSON (aka Hans) is a Swedish drummer, percussionist and composer mostly in the avant-garde realm. He has had a very long career, dating back to the mid-1960s and has been a member of many well-respected bands, including Samla Mammas Manna, Ensemble Nimbus and The Flower Kings.
Starting his professional music career with pop-group OBJECTIONS in the mid-1960s, Hasse Bruniusson then discovered jazz and would later go on to form avant-garde and progressive rock band SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA in 1969 along with Lars Kranz (also of Objections), Lars Hollmer and Henrik Ahberg. He would play drums and percussion for all of Samla Mammas Manna/Zamla Mammaz Manna's albums up to their disbandment in 1980. In 1979, he played percussion in FANTASIA, which included guitarist Roine Stolt (who had recently left Kaipa) and in 1980, he played drums with "supergroup" NYA LJUDBOLAGET, which featured Ulf Wallander, Karl-Erik Eriksson and Ove Karlsson on their self-titled only album.
Bruniusson then became a free agent and recorded his first solo album "Mannaminne "in 1982/83, along with Roine Stolt and other guests. This album was light-hearted and entirely composed by Hasse and he not only played drums but also sang and played piano and synthesizer.
Due to his links with the Rock in Opposition movement, he played drums on Fred Frith's 1983 solo album "Cheap at Half the Price".
During the 1980s, he began to work closely with Hasse Nordelius of drum company Clavia and helped develop their electric drumkits, including the "D-drums" and his own creation, the "Apparatorium", an electro-acoustic drum kit.
In 1986 and 1987, he would record two albums with TRIANGULUS, a band featuring Peter Bryngelsson and Roine Stolt.
Come 1991, he helped reform SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA (until their disbandment in 1999) and in 1992, he became a member of avant garde progressive rock band ENSEMBLE NIMBUS (who have released three studio albums to date).
However, it was also in 1992, that symphonic progressive rock band THE FLOWER KINGS were formed. Featuring Bruniusson on percussion and long time friend and collaborator Roine Stolt, the band also initially featured Michael Stolt, Tomas Bodin, Jaime Salazar and Hasse Fröberg. The Flower Kings would become a very popular and well respected band not only in his native Sweden but throughout the world.
In 2002, Bruniusson recorded his second album "Hasse Bruniusson Proudly Presents: Flying Food Circus" and then formed a touring band called FLYING FOOD CIRCUS alongside Håkan Almkvist (of Ensemble Nimbus), Bobbo Andersson and Erik Lidholm.
He is currently still a member of The Flower Kings and Ensemble Nimbus (recording new material as of 2008) and has much recorded material, especially with his experimental group CYBORG (with Håkan Almkvist and Per Nordin) which maybe released in the future.
Hasse Bruniusson has many influences and favourite bands and musicians, including: Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Magma, Yes, David Thorn and avant-garde, free form and electronic music in general..
Bruniusson's solo music is always challenging and humorous in his own laconic and unique style and he has unbound energy and intuitiveness. FLYING FOOD CIRCUS is a cross between mid-period Samla Mammas Manna and Waka/Jawaka-era Frank Zappa. If you enjoy his work with Samla Mammas Manna and Ensemble Nimbus especially, you will definitely enjoy his solo work.
