Post Description
Frank Zappa - Vienna 1988
Frank Zappa
8th May 1988 Wien (Vienna) Stadthalle
PAL Video 79min A- (1st gen) 1 DVD SL
4:3 , 720 X 576 25.000i
Lineage : 1st gen VHS >direct copy onto DVD in Doubledeck in XP mode (highest level) > DVD shrink with error detection onto HDD > edited and synced with 1st gen audience in Vegas 6 and mastered on the highest possible level 9.3 Mbps with LPCM 2.0 1536 kbps sound in DVD Architect 4.
When I aquired the VHS back in 1991, the guy told me it was a 1st gen copy. He sounded austrian; I believed him and was surprised, how good the picture quality actually was.. ( now after converting onto a DVD it's 2nd gen ?)
It's obvious today, that the guy filmed handheld - not with a tripod - which gives the whole thing this little shaky feeling.
It is for sure no High Definition, but for an old VHS like this, it's in a pretty good shape.
Didn't watch it again until 4 days ago by the way of making a direct DVD copy on my double VHS/DVD player.
The original sound was rather poor, so I used the master (?) / 1st gen audience recording, that was posted here a while ago, to replace it.
That was a little tricky with the syncronisation, as the aud recording seemed to get faster with every song.
TBP was almost the same speed; but by the end of the show I had to slow down WP by nearly 2%.
Anyways, I believe the result is a great Video and if you watch it on a big screen with the sound up, you will enjoy it as much as I do. By now I've seen it 5 times and it is still a great joy.
Btw, in terms of guitar solos, this is a great show to watch too, because we have solos in BP, BN, MTED, HPHATGH, some guitar in Peaches and Stairway, then again solos in Sharleena, COTL and WP.
Thats 7 solos and some guitar on the side. Not bad for half a show !
This was one of the " no fun but a lot of music " shows in early may 1988.
The guitar solo in Penguin is done by MK and is also a good one.
Highlights are of course the Black Napkins solos, as also heard on "Make a jazz noise here" plus a lengthy guitar solo by FZ, that was cut out on the official version.
Green Hotel is up to the solo on " Broadway The Hard Way " and 1.25 min of the over 6 min solo is on Trance Fusion as "Finding Higgs Bosom".
Now to the setlist :
Set 1
The Black Page > a lot is missing in the beginning, so I used the aud as the background for the titles.
Intros > After " Ike Willis " the camera made a right turn and didn't come back until "Eat That Question"
Missing : I Ain't Got No Heart, Packard Goose, Any Kind Of Pain, Cosmik Debris, Inca Roads, Advance Romance, Eric Dolphy M BBQ, Bamboozled By Love, Bolero. A big part of Bolero can be seen in Rudi Dolezals Doku.
Set 2
Eat That Question
Black Napkins
More Trouble Every Day
Penguin In Bondage
Green Hotel
Peaches En Regalia
Stairway To Heaven
Sharleena
Montana
City Of Tiny Lites
Whippin' Post
This is IMHO the best audience-shot show we have thus far. Sorry, that it took so long to pop up, but the move from Los Angeles here into the italian woods slowed down the whole process.
P.S. my DSL is gone again thanks to the 200 year old telephone lines coming from too far away.
Was a pleasure for almost 3 weeks to be able to download and communicate in broadband. Now back to dialup, until the fuzzies have replaced the old lines with new ones.
Thats why I've sent the Files to AGI, who is hopefully so nice to help me seeding.
P.S.2 I believe there was a DVD cover out there, which could be used; or unicrayon wants to show his genius again, which I would love to see.
