Post Description

I saw UFO blow Van Halen & Aerosmith away at a Festival in Los Angeles in the late 70's, have bought and enjoyed their work over the years, then caught them again last year on the "You are Here" Tour. This DVD clearly shows how the bands sound and song catalog has blown away rock fans for three decades. You know this is a very talented group (or you wouldn't be reading this!), but the surprise is how well this DVD captures UFO. I only have about ten Rock DVD's, but this is easily the best planned and produced among the group.

I bought this for the show and Disc 1 delivers a strong effort. Phil has the best voice in rock, Vinnie adds to the UFO sound within his distinct style and the rhythm section is rock solid. With so much to choose from, we all could debate the song list. I'm glad they included five new tunes. I probably would have traded 1-2 classics for perhaps something more obscure from the 80's/90's. Hey, I love Only you can Rock Me as much as you, but I've been listening to it for almost 30 years.

Shooting the show in a club was a good choice since UFO is more about the music than the show, but they could have picked a club that had a least a little more room for the band and a stage with a little visual appeal. It's not far removed from someone building a stage in a warehouse. In all of Europe, there must be a club with better camera sightlines and that comes across better on camera. Not a big deal, but this is a DVD and you can't help notice that the backdrop ain't helpin' the cause much.

Disc 2 is an outstanding effort, with two distinct parts. The six in studio songs are well selected and gives us a chance to watch the guys at work, ESPECIALLY Vinnie. Love to Love and Try Me are supported by strings ... in fact, this is probably the best version of Love to Love I've heard. These six songs leaving you wish there were more ... it's that good.

I really enjoyed the interviews and mini-documentary features. I've followed UFO for a long time, but didn't know much about them. Obviously these guys have been down a long road and hearing them discuss London in the earlier days, Schenker and their recent work is interesting. About 95% of it was new to me ! Even better, they come across as guys you would really like to sit and tip a few beers with.

All these interviews made me think that with the dozens of UFO compliations available, how about a comprehensive boxed set ? Probably will never happen, but Phil, Paul & Pete obviously have a good sense of the bands history and strenghes. Getting a step beyond the same repackaged hits would be an interesting project.

I am really glad that somebody associated with UFO had the passion and intellegence to put out such a complete, well rounded production. They understand the bands place in producing great rock and roll for thirty years. They love UFO as much as we do.
