"Iron rods spear through bare flesh. Sharp hooks pierce the naked backs. An 
intoxicating mixture of fragrant jasmine and incense smoke permeates through the 
air. Devotees dance in a locked state of trance as they sing deafening choruses 
of hypnotic chants.

Once a year, close to a million Hindu worshippers make the pilgrimage to the 
Batu Caves, Malaysia to offer spectacular offerings to the Deity, Lord Murugan. 
They must complete the arduous task of climbing the 272 steps that lead to the 
sacred cave to offer their prayers at the holy temple inside."
