Build A Trolling Motor II
1 pdf

This outboard will power a 12 foot pram for hours on a single charge. The project can be completed on a very small
budget with minimum labor. The motor is built by installing 6 volt field coils from two field automobile starter in a
six volt two brush auto generator. The starter motor comes from Chevy trucks model years 1932 to 1935 or passenger
cars built between 1932 and 1951. The most readily available generator would be an Autolite, # GGW 6001. Both are
old enough to be in low demand and bought at very reasonable prices. Try an auto wrecking yard or a starter alternator
rebuilding shop for these parts.

For the lower end try outboard repair shops. Many times customers will change their minds when confronted with
high estimates and leave the old motor rather than repairing it. In our case we talked the dealer into giving it away.
The top end was blown but all we needed was the lower half. Any 1.5 to 5 HP motor will do for this project.

Fabrication
Start by disassembling and cleaning the generator. Make sure all parts are in working order before continuing.
Remove and discard the field coils and install the coils from the starter. The field coil connections are soldered
together. If the motor should turn the wrong way reverse the polarity of the brushes that is ground the brush that is
insulated and insulate the grounded brush...
