Eggroll & The Shakes - Fairytale (music request)
Eggroll biography
Is somebody asked me in which country I see the future of Prog' I would say without doubts that in Israel, bands as TRESPASS or SYMPOZION (Both already in Prog Archives) are a good example of this evolution, and now EGGROLL
complete a group of promising new artists.
The band was formed almost as a game around the turn of the Century when a bunch of high school students joined for a weekend gig organized by their drummer Gil Idan, who's nickname was EGGROLL,
and that's how the name of the band was chosen, but it wouldn't be until three years later that they started the musical career, because as any Israeli citizen they had to make their military service.
EGGROLL was formed as a cover band, as a fact the first two tracks I heard by them are Dancing with the Moonlit Knight and Firth of Fifth (Piano intro included).
This Gebnesis cover versions impressed me very highly, mainly because the voice of Lior Seker has absolutely no similarity with Peter Gabriel's but his solid performance and the perfect recreation of the music
made me forget I was before a cover version, specially the excellent mellotron work by Lior Talmor..
The band is formed by very qualified musicians:
· Lior Seker the frontman, lead vocalist and guitar player
· The virtuoso keyboardist Lior Talmor
· Sagi Agiel (Guitar, Backing Vocals)
· Dan Carpman -appears as Dan Karpman in the DVD cover- (Bass Guitar, Vocals, Backing Vocals)
· Naama Shalev (Flute, Backing Vocals)
· And of course Gil Idan in drums.
After some successful cover acts in Tel Aviv theaters and several halls around Israel and Kibutz Horashim, they started to add a couple of own themes (with lyrics in English or Instrumentals) and in 2004 they release the first...DVD,
called "EGGROLL - Live Progressive Act" in which they mix excellent cover versions of Thick as a Brick, Starless and Suppers Ready (Starting in Willow's farm) with two completely original tracks (Into the Dark and China)
plus a sixth one with fragments of their own material mixed with images and short words of the band (That I'm unable to understand due to the language gap).
Their sound has diverse influences that go from power ballads to Genesis and specially King Crimson, even when absolutely related to Symphonic Prog with a touch of Metal or Hard Rock.
But the most important aspect relies in the performance, they make this complex music sound absolutely simple.
After the release of the DVD they continue with the cover concerts but gradually adding more of their own stuff, until the last cover show in Be'er Ya'akov when they announce that their next gig will be exclusively with original
material.
This new tour was received with different opinions, something normal and similar to what happened to Frágil in Perú when people continued asking for Yes and Genesis music, but the band insisted in playing only their own material.
