Nigeria is een land in het westen van Afrika. Het ligt aan de Zuid-Atlantische Oceaan (Golf van Guinee). De buurlanden zijn Benin, Niger, Tsjaad en Kameroen. De hoofdstad is Abuja. 
Daarvoor had de havenstad Lagos die functie. Nigeria is genoemd naar de rivier de Niger. Met een lengte van 4200 kilometer is deze rivier, na de Nijl en de Zaïre, de langste rivier van Afrika.
Nigeria is ongeveer 27 keer zo groot als Nederland en heeft 150 miljoen inwoners. Olie is het belangrijkste exportproduct van Nigeria.
Nigeria heeft het hoogste percentage tweelingen ter wereld. In Nigeria worden gemiddeld 50 tweelingen per 1000 zwangerschappen geboren, in Nederland 18.
