** Biography **
Asura is a musical concept from Lyon, France who have polished a unique
electronic universe of sound; somewhere between Trip Hop, Ambient and World
Music.
Perpetuating melancholic lyrics, symphonic waves, alternating rhythms, heavy or
throbbing, liturgical chants, Asura introduces a certain solemn vision of the
world. Powered by both electronic machines and acoustic instruments, they have
created a very distinctive sound which has contributed to making Asura one of
the most recognizable bands of the Trance Ambient genre.
Formed in 1996, Asura was first comprised of Charles Farewell and Vincent
Villuis. Their debut album, Code Eternity, was released in 2000 on Ultimae
Records (France).
Containing deep groove analog sounds, trance rhythms and an overflowing cup of
ambient dub elements, it showed that ambient music could sometimes be more
powerful than upbeat dance music.
From 2001 to 2005, Asura consists of founding member Charles Farewel, synth,
vocals and guitar, pianist Christopher Maze (who joined in 1998), and bassist
Alex Ackerman, who replaced Vincent Villuis (gone to concentrate on his solo
project, Aes Dana).
Their last album, Lost Eden, is a mèlange of genres and moments of life and
visits musical territories not previously explored in their first opus. Many
artists inspire their work such as Peter Gabriel, Natacha Atlas, Kruder and
Dorfmeister, Moby and Tangerine Dream, as well as FSOL, Barramundi, Boards of
Canada and Banco de Gaia, all well known from the realms of Emusic.
In early 2004, Lost Eden was picked up by Dutch Records, (a sub-label of TV
Matters) and subsequently released August 10 for the USA. It is distributed by
Navarre Corporation. The trio is quickly gaining recognition and credibitly,
with a multitude of favorable reviews and features running in numerous online
and print music mags including AudioRevolution.com, Raves.com, iVibes.net,
AtomicLife.com, Synthtopia.com to name but a few, and there are upcoming
feature articles on PopMatters.com (750.000 readers) and in Big Shot Magazine
(Sept 21st Issue). They"ve been "Editor"s pick" for label news on mi2n (Music
Industry News Network) and were in the top 5 Electronica downloads chart on
Artist Direct (Juli 28th, "04).
Tracks from the album have received National radio play on Echoes, a show
syndicated to more than 150 stations across America and compiled by music
industry veteran John Dilberto.
Since Juli 2005, Asura is C. Farewell.
