3. VOYAGER.[2014]

So I’m minding my own business and then the obligatory notification pings in my ear, to alert me of incoming music from RNRR HQ. Generally this process is a mixture of excitement and apprehension, but one that is endured none the less, as you just never know what little gem you will receive and when I say gem…I mean a HUGE F**KING RUBY ENCRUSTED DIAMOND.

Voyager is another musical import from the land down under and has left me musically salivating, yet again, with the quality of musicianship and writing ability within a different genre to the other great Australian bands that I rave about. We take progressive rock/metal and a sprinkling of 80′s pop and have a very enjoyable heavy, super-catchy, melodic, modern sound that is so tantalising that, I had to use the word tantalising to explain my mood there. I can’t say enough about this album and as a fan of progressive rock and metal; I can safely say I have all the elements in one band. Some may try to explain this sort of 80′s vibe that is going on, but it no way explains or captures the essence that is Voyager and in particular their new album V.

Think Dream Theater’s Images and Words think Soilwork and you’re getting there; take Duran Duran, Aha and Tears for Fears and you’ll be nearly at the point of musical goodness, but alas, you simply need to just listen to Voyager to get the full picture.

After some research, I have discovered this is their fifth studio album which is quite the achievement in itself but I feel a little saddened by this because I have only discovered them by album five. However I have now procured the four albums that once filled a void in my music collection and will definitely bring myself up to date with the musical voyage of Voyager.

It’s with this revelation I have nothing to compare their current album and will briskly step in and say this album is tremendous and will be utterly surprised if any album prior to this, no matter how much I enjoy it, will be anywhere near as good as this one.

The album boasts a fat and chunky thirteen tracks that weave in creative bliss like a rollercoaster through a garden of ice cream and jelly; allowing the senses to be taken from top to bottom of the emotional enjoyment of music. I have listened to this album in various situations, to see if I can have it sync up in some sort of significant way as my life soundtrack, but even with all that bollocks to one side, it’s an album for all occasions and you should try it out. Melodies soar, guitars roar in melodious contempt of anything progressive you’ve ever heard. Drums follow and take lead with rhythm that allows you to tap along knowingly, as if you were sat there helping to write the music and if you couple all this with the vocals and, main and support, additional piano, synth and whatever wizardry this band have conjured, you will sit with the obligatory onion face in approval, nodding as you go.

This album has everything you need for any situation that requires a soundtrack and hopefully someone will take notice of my suggestion to have this band score some action movies; ’cause that’s a movie I will want to see.

Production and delivery can’t rate highly enough and my hat is duly tipped to the effort spend in production. I leave you with the thought that this album is a must for the music enthusiast and by that I don’t mean stuffy muso’s, I mean those who enjoy a good song and several of them. Technical music ability on this album is gifted and rightly so, but the songs themselves speak to a wider community of music lovers and I am happy I have it now, and all that is left for me to say is that you should own this album, go see them live and hope to all that is justified, that they write the next Bond theme.
