Daniel Hope (born 17 August 1973)[1] is a British classical violinist. In 2016 he will succeed Sir Roger Norrington as Music Director of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra (ZKO).
Hope was born in Durban, South Africa, and moved as a child with his family to London, where he was educated at Highgate School and received tuition by Yehudi Menuhin. Hope is the son of South African poet and novelist, Christopher Hope, FRSL.[4] His violin is the 1737 Guarneri "ex-Lipinski".
Hope was a member of the Beaux Arts Trio from 2002 until the ensemble was disbanded in 2008. In 2011 he was appointed Visiting Professor in Violin by the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied under Zakhar Bron and gained a diploma (DipRAM) and a fellowship (FRAM).
Hope presented the 2013 documentary film The Secrets of the Violin which explored the history of violin making from Amati, Stradivari and Guarneri to modern makers like Samuel Zygmuntowicz.[6] The film also covered the role of the violin dealer Dietmar Machold who was jailed in Vienna for six years for fraudulent bankruptcy.
He has won the ECHO Klassik Prize five times, in 2006 as Instrumentalist of the Year.[7] He now lives in Vienna.
Hope is also a longtime friend and supporter of the Freya von Moltke Foundation. He has supported them through many successful benefit concerts and events.
