De inmiddels veertigjarige Pink Panther is wat mij betreft één van de coolste cartoonhelden ter wereld. Met zijn debuut in de openingscredits van de filmkomedie The Pink Panther met Peter Sellers stal hij wereldwijd de harten van pers, publiek en filmliefhebbers. De cartoons worden ook nu nog gemaakt, maar de originele Pink Panther avonturen uit de oude doos zijn in de loop der jaren uitgegroeid tot klassiekers. Deze 124 tekenfilms, waaronder ook het Oscarwinnende The Pink Phink, zijn nu voor het eerst samengebracht in één collectie. Deze verzameling is qua compleetheid een eerbetoon aan alle fans door de jaren heen en de fans die in de toekomst beslist nog zullen volgen!

Het gezegde 'De Eerste, de Beste' is in het geval van de tekenfilms van The Pink Panther ondubbelzinnig van toepassing. De allereerste aflevering, The Pink Phink, won in 1965 een Oscar voor beste korte animatie. Friz Freleng en David DePatie produceerden vele jaren met veel succes nieuwe avonturen van de roze panter. Maar zoals dat vaker gaat met langlopende series ebt de originaliteit aan het eind een beetje weg. Zo ook bij de tekenfilms van The Pink Panther. Desalniettemin wist mijn zoon van nog geen drie jaar ademloos te genieten van een aantal marathons van Pink Panther tekenfilms. Persoonlijk heb ik ook liever dat hij naar het overzichtelijke tekenwerk van Friz Freleng kijkt dan naar dat drukke Pokémon en Yu-Gi-Oh gedoe van tegenwoordig.
Overigens ziet de box er keurig uit in haar oranjekleurige retroverpakking. Hierdoor misstaat deze box niet naast de boxuitgave van de live action Pink Panther-klassiekers met in de hoofdrol de onnavolgbare Peter Sellers als de hilarische Inspecteur Clouseau.
