"Freebird the Movie" Review: If you are not familiar with this, then I'll give you a little background information. This movie is somewhat of a documentary, that proceeds into full live performances of the "Original Lynyrd Skynyrd" Band at their peak. It includes most of their concert performance at the Knebworth Music Festival in England during 1976. This was an outdoor concert in front of a crowd of approximately 250,000 fans. It is simply awesome. Then you get some live performances in some other venues, and a grand finale performance of "Freebird" the song at "A Day on The Green" presented by Bill Graham, on the 4th of July, 1977 in Oakland, California.
The line-up on "Freebird the Movie" includes:
Ronnie Van Zant - Lead Vocals
Gary Rossington - Guitar, including slide
Allen Collins - Guitar
Steve Gaines - Guitar
Leon Wilkeson - Bass
Billy Powell - Piano
Artimus Pyle - Drums
Background Vocals: (The Original Honkettes):
Cassie Gaines
Lesley Hawkins
Jo Jo Billingsly
The Song Set of "Freebird the Movie": (Note - The Songs may not necessarily be in this particular order):
1.Workin' For MCA
2.I Ain't the One
3.Saturday Night Special
4.Searching
5.What's Your Name
6.Whiskey Rock a Roller
7.Travellin' Man (This one includes excellent slide guitar work by Gary Rossington)
8.Gimme Three Steps
9.Gimme Back My Bullets
10.Cry For the Bad Man
11.Call Me the Breeze
12.T for Texas (This Lynyrd Skynyrd version is the best version, I've ever heard of this song. They put a lot of guitar work into it, and extend it out for about 10 minutes or so. It's Awesome!!!)
13.Freebird (This performance is so good, that words just cannot describe it!!! This performance was filmed on the 4th of July, 1977 at Bill Graham's "A Day on The Green" in Oakland, California, before a packed, outdoor, enthusiastic crowd.)
Then you get bonus songs as follows:
14.Sweet Home Alabama
15.That Smell
The movie ends with the band members boarding their plane, and shows them taking off. Then in Captions on the screen it mentions that their plane crashed on October 20, 1977, killing Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, Dean Kilpatrick (road manager) and both pilots. It leaves you wondering "What might have been?"
