The stormy relationship between a 24-year-old gay man and his assertive grandmother is dissected in this involving and emotional French character study.
Review
Régine, and the ashes of his recently departed mother – with her urn prominently sitting on their balcony. The old woman and the often tempestuous Guillaume have a stormy relationship – with flare-ups and make-ups being the norm. The young man is caught up in his emotional dependence to both women and his increasing desire for independence. Not overly “gay” (in the sense of naked men or discussions about homosexuality), the film accepts Guillaume’s homosexuality as a norm, as does the grandmother - for when her grandson and his older boyfriend split up, she works hard in getting them back together. Grand Sons is a splendid drawing room drama of two finely-observed and passionate individuals attempting to remain a family. . .yet at the same time maintain some distance.
