He's already revealed to us what a big old soppy he is when it comes to dogs, but Martin Clunes is just as infatuated with horses. "This is Chester," he says, introducing his own horse. "And I love him," he adds emphatically. But what Clunes can't figure out is how humans ever managed to persuade such a shy, flighty creature as the horse to let us get on its back and ride it. Clunes is no David Attenborough, but in this first of a two-part documentary he is disarmingly enthusiastic, whether watching a herd of Kazakh ponies thundering across the Asian steppes or trying a spot of equine-assisted therapy (apparently horses are so sensitive to our feelings they can help with all sorts of emotional problems - they're the animal world's Marje Proops). What is remarkable to see, though, is horse whisperer Monty Roberts teaching Clunes how to communicate properly with Chester. After just a few moments the massive horse is quietly following his owner around like a devoted dog. It's a lovely moment.
