Original notes:

Lou’s Notes: Their latest album at the time, A Kind Of A Hush, had been released in June 1976. Karen had started her battle with anorexia nervosa in 1975, having to partially cancel their European/Japanese tour. She would sadly die in 1983 from the disease, when it seemed she was doing well and poised for a comeback. She was only 32 - I was 29 at the time. A few glitches were fixed and the show was re-tracked. Volume levels were raised slightly.

Extract from The Carpenters: The Untold Story, by Ray Coleman:

During the German leg of that European tour, Richard and Karen went their separate ways most of the time… They carried on normally with no signs of the prima donna touches exhibited by so many artists. Their energy level was extraordinarily high in public, even though he was relying on sleeping pills at night and she was eating little. Although Richard’s pill-taking habits were about to surface in a self-destructive debacle, there was no visual evidence of this. The public was completely unaware of this private drama that was about to reach a crescendo for the Carpenter family…

Their nadir came in September 1978 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Richard had reached the point where everyday, he could hardly control his slurred speech until 5 pm - and he simply could not wait to get back to bed.
