Two Great Moderns: Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni
Special issue of "Cahiers du Cinema" in memoriam Bergman & Antonioni.
The extraordinary coincidence of the deaths on the same day of Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni tends to render a little more mythological still the “great narrative” of which they will have truly been the heroes: that of the modernity of cinema. There might then be a great danger of becoming over-awed by the falling of this shadow that at the same time makes a statue out of the great artists and dismisses their works to a past as prestigious as it is by-gone. It’s for Bergman and for Antonioni that we have composed this special issue. And, thus, against such an embalming consecration, and its “wise” double that by categorizing and periodizing the history of cinema traps films and filmmakers in boxes – among them that of a modernity reduced to a system, – boxes from which they might never get out. This issue is thus done today, in the light of the present, to try to share why and how the works of the Swede and those of the Italian matter to us, touch us, serve us.
