Hank Snow - Most Requested  (BCD 17351)



The concept behind Bear Family's 2014 collection is simple. They partnered with the Hank Snow Home Town Museum in Liverpool, Nova Scotia to present a compilation of 18 of the most popular -- aka "the most requested," the songs mentioned most by visitors to the museum -- Snow songs, adding a previously unreleased Rainbow Ranch Recording of an instrumental, "Am I Losing You," as collector bait. There are indeed many, many hits here -- "I'm Movin' On" and "I've Been Everywhere," of course, plus a host of other songs ranging from "(Now and Then There's) A Fool Such as I" to 1974's "Hello Love," his last number one -- but the catch is, with the exception of "Yellow Roses" and "Down the Trail of Achin' Hearts," all of this was recorded between 1960-1974, which means if a Snow single hit the charts prior to this era, it's a re-recording. This is bound to frustrate some listeners but others may be pleased, because these '60s vintage sides are richer, warmer, and smoother than the hard-lined boogie and country from the '40s and '50s (and Snow does a nice job with such '70s standards as "Snowbird," too). And that's where the association with the museum comes into play: this isn't a historical compilation so much as it is a celebration of an icon, and it works quite well in that regard.
