Na de succesvolle overzichtsbox Sound of the Westcoast, komt Leo Blokhuis nu met de box Sound of South. Onderwerp van deze box is de soul- en de country-soulmuziek gedurende de periode 1961-1976. Er komt dus niet alleen pure soul aan bod, maar in Sound of the South komt ook de country aan bod.
Zowel Soul als Country is, op het eerste gezicht, misschien een niet heel erg voor de hand liggende combinatie. Immers, soul is bij uitstek zwarte muziek is, en de country is bij uitstek blank muziek. In de periode die Blokhuis in Sound of the South onder de loep neemt, begon in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten de grenzen tussen beide muziekgenres echter te vervagen. Dat kwam doordat al in de vroege jaren zestig multiraciale bands de artiesten van het bekende soullabel Stax in Memphis begeleidden en ex-countrymuzikanten de grote soulsterren in de Fame-studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama begeleidden.
Deze samenwerking tussen beide, voorheen strikt gescheidden, werelden zorgde voor een muzikale kruisbestuiving die country-soul wordt genoemd. In Sound of the South, inventariseert Leo Blokhuis niet alleen de beste, door blanken beïnvloede, soul, maar ook de soulvolle country.
