Post Description
In June 1976, the Grateful Dead returned to touring after a 19 month break. Between their last show at Winterland on October 20, 1974 and their first show of their Spring 1976 tour, the band only played 4 concerts, all in 1975. During that break, the Jerry Garcia Band did its share to keep Deadheads happy, playing 115 concerts in 1975 and then another 80 in 1976! This soundboard catches them at one of Jerry’s favorite venues, the Keystone in Berkeley, CA on December 22, 1976, 37 years ago today. This show was the middle of 3 at the Keystone (the others being on December 21 and 23), a pre-Christmas celebration by the JGB. (The Dead by the way, would play the Cow Palace on December 31, 1976, their almost annual New Year’s Eve Bash, a show which has been released on CD). Jerry’s set features his last live performance of Ride Mighty High, a song originally recorded by The Mighty Clouds of Joy, an American gospel quartet, and later covered by Gloria Gaynor. In addition, the concert also includes a rare performance of Stir It Up, originally written by Bob Marley. It never ceases to amaze me how many different artists and styles of music Garcia interpreted during his career. Download this show for those 2 extraordinary covers.
