In 1725, raakt samurai Isaburo getergd, als zijn zoon dient te trouwen met de minnares van zijn leider. Isaburo wil dit niet toestaan, maar zijn zoon accepteert het en hij en de vrouw, Ichi, worden verliefd. Toshiro Mifune stars as Isaburo Sasahara, an aging swordsman living a quiet life until his clan lord orders that his son marry the lord's mistress, who has recently displeased the ruler.
