William Martin (Billy) Joel (The Bronx (New York), 9 mei 1949) is een Amerikaanse pianist, singer-songwriter en componist. Vanaf 1973 produceerde hij popmuziekhits (begonnen met de single "Piano Man") tot zijn afscheid in 1993. Daarna ging hij nog af en toe op tournee (meestal met Elton John), naast het schrijven en opnemen van klassieke muziek.
Van jongs af aan had Joel sterke interesse in muziek, vooral klassieke muziek.

Hij werd hierbij geïnspireerd door onder andere Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Otis Redding en Ludwig van Beethoven.
