Post Description

This is not a very famous Jazz album but it's a good one. Before recording this, his solo debut, J.R. Monterose played with Charles Mingus and Kenny Dorham. Apparently he did not enjoy his time with Mingus. That's funny because the album is hard bop that's clearly influenced by Dorham and Mingus' music. The Mingus feel is subtle, but there nonetheless. Another intriguing element is the fact that J.R. Monterose sounds similar to Charlie Rouse, who I associate with Thelonious Monk. So I end up with a feeling that I'm listening to a combination of three different groups, making it a pretty unique recording.
