Post Description
Definitely one of Wakeman's best DVDs, featuring an exciting concert played by the great Rick with his quartet (including drummer Tony Fernandez, bassist David Paton and singer Ashley Holt) plus intimate studio versions of piano solo interpretations of three Yes's masterworks. Real highlights here are the energetic band versions of "Anne Boleyn", "Catherine Parr" and "Journey To The Centre Of the Earth", as well as the very ornate and touching piano solo (or piano duets) interpretations of "Awaken" and "Close To The Edge". Also included is a beautiful keyboard solo arrangement of "Wonderful Stories" accompanied by some Roger Dean views.
Among other things, Wakeman is certainly one of the greatest improvisers in all the history of rock keyboards, and the above-mentioned band pieces are especially interesting in this respect. The same goes for the magical and always new keyboard sounds he is able to create (in my opinion, he is unrivalled in that). Also very good is Tony Fernandez's drum solo in "Anne Boleyn".
Besides that, the three above-mentioned band pieces are especially revealing about the incredible amount of sound and energy Wakeman is able to create within a keyboards/bass/drums trio setting (although a quartet, his band here can really be considered a trio, because in all these pieces Holt actually just plays some minor percussions and he sings--beautifully--only in "Journey").
In short, this DVD is really a must for anyone interested in Rick Wakeman and Prog Rock, and more in general in keyboards ultimate wizardry.
