“Anyone who knows their stuff will tell you Andi Deris is the most underrated, over-shadowed and lost-in-the-mix force in metal. Fans who don’t know their stuff also don’t know that HELLOWEEN released anything after ‘Keepers 2’. Sad really. My point is that this man can write a mean song, shred when he feels like it, and sing like he means it. All in a day’s work. Now take a look at what happens when he goes solo.

“House of Pleasure” is a dark hybrid of a song that toys with what happens when anthem rock collides with traditional metal aggression. It’s the sort of album opener that rises above the hit-and-run most album openers barely manage. But like I said, this guy’s a songwriter first and foremost. As if to prove the point he inserts a semi-ballad in at track 2. It’s the title track and at every level (from the evocative intro to the rain themed album artwork) it nails the words and music to rip of an instant classic of a song.

“Think Higher” is straight out of the HELLOWEEN strength of human spirit book. Michael Weikath is the actual undisputed master here, but Deris speaks the same language. The end result is a roller coaster of a tune that just won’t let up anytime soon. Catchy and smart kind of sums it up best. “Goodbye Jenny” is about as personal as ballads get (it’s about the death of a friend). The power and pain is there from the sad piano opening to the angry and unforgiving chorus. It’s got hit written all over it, and a deceptively simple song structure.

“The King of 7 Eyes” sees Deris team up with all bar the drummer from HELLOWEEN to deliver a power metal side step that raises the roof and plays a sneaky little game of catch me if you can with the lyrics. While the next four tracks see the album take a heavy AOR turn but without ending up at wimp central. The lyrical themes are big, and the hooks fit the moment every single time. So yes, not a filler in sight. Certainly not at “Could I leave Forever”. Dare you to not turn up the volume the very first time you hear this song. What with that chorus that soars into place after chewing up and spitting out every assembly line heartbreak song you ever knew.

And no need to touch the volume for “1000 Years Away”. It’s a song about child suicide; not a subject I’ve seen done before, and one I doubt I’ll ever see done better. Deris pours so much raw firepower and emotion into this one (including a show stopping quickfire monologue at half way) that it seems to completely transcend its 4 minute length to take on an epic breadth. Not going to crap on further about this one. It’s brave and brilliant. That’s Andi Deris all over people.
