“Wolfsbane were the first English band signed by Rick Rubin's Def American label, and the ever patriotic British press immediately began touting the band as the next big thing. Famous for raw, organic production jobs which revitalized many a career, Rubin completely botched the band's 1989 debut, Live Fast Die Fast, resulting in a flat sound that squelched the band's raucous metal aggression. All the tracks on side one are winners, but only "Money to Burn" and "Killing Machine" actually pack any serious punch, leaving the rest ("Manhunt," "Shakin'," "Fell Out of Heaven") wallowing in unfulfilled promise. The first single "I Like It Hot" sounds rather forced, and the rather catchy ballad "Tears from a Fool" is simply out of place, but closer "Pretty Baby" manages some enthusiasm. Though future albums would correct the production blunders, most would argue this is still the band's creative high point.
