The music world was shaken by the release of Beatles vault outtakes by bootleggers starting in 1988. Little did any one know the floodgates were about to be opened. The material found in the six CDs in the Ultra Rare Trax series (released in 1988 and 1989) were about to be joined by more outtakes compilations from other companies. For its part EMI (the Beatles label in the UK), which had prior to 1988 denied that such tapes existed, was slow to react. Aside from the expected cease and desist letters to retailers, The Beatles’ camp didn’t seem in a hurry to counter the bootleggers with authorized product.
But that lackadaisical attitude changed in 1993 when bootleggers in Italy created Artifacts, an epic 5-CD compilation of newly unearthed Beatles rarities presented in chronological order. It was so successful in underground circles that a sequel, “Artifacts II,” was issued the following year.
Like its predecessor, “Artifacts II” contains outtakes, live concert tracks, demos, overdub sessions, and rehearsals. To fill space the compilers rely heavily on the annual Christmas records the band made for their fan club, BBC Radio performances, low quality home demos and monitor mixes, and jam sessions recorded for the “Let It Be” film in January 1969.
It would take EMI several years to come up with an official release. Obviously using the “Artifacts” boxes as a prototype, the sprawling “Beatles Anthology” hit the marketplace like a tidal wave and did not disappoint. The official Beatles vault releases have made the “Artifacts” boxes obsolete, however, there are some tracks found on the bootleg box sets that don’t appear on “Anthology,” making them worthwhile additions to any Beatles collection.
Note: The box set I was given years ago did not have a booklet so I have scanned all other packaging at 600 d.p.i. and have found scans at 150 d.p.i. of selected booklet pages (all of the track information) on the internet. If you have the full “Artifacts II” booklet, please scan all of the pages in high quality and share them with us.
