Rock & Chips is a British comedy-drama and a prequel to the situation comedy Only Fools and Horses. It is the second spin-off from the original series, after The Green Green Grass. The sitcom story focused on the lives of local villain Freddie Robdal, Joan and Reg Trotter and their teenage son Del Boy in the 1960s. The pilot was ninety minutes in duration and aired on BBC One on 24 January 2010. It was produced by Shazam Productions and the BBC.
In 2003, it was reported that John Sullivan was developing a prequel to Only Fools And Horses, entitled Once Upon a Time in Peckham, which would show Del, Trigger, Boycie and Denzil as youngsters in the 1960s, and have a prominent role for Del and Rodney's parents.[4] In 2009, it was again reported that the BBC were considering commissioning the show, and John Sullivan told The Mail on Sunday that he was planning a prequel to Only Fools and Horses which would star Nicholas Lyndhurst as Freddie "The Frog" Robdal, a local criminal and Rodney's biological father. Robdal was the focus of the episode "The Frog's Legacy".
On 3 July 2009, the BBC announced that the spin-off would be titled Sex, Drugs & Rock 'n' Chips, and would be a 90-minute comedy drama. Filming began in October 2009, with transmission planned for 2010.
On 14 January, 2010, a BBC press release confirmed the show's title had been changed to Rock & Chips.
