“Friends, here we have a two-CD set not commonly circulated, these are different takes and versions along with many unreleased songs, I’ve made notes on each individual track for reference and had to omit three songs as the vocal tracks on each sound the same as the released versions or close enough I wasn’t comfortable including them.

“Many of these songs in my opinion are superior to the songs that showed up on the very commercial MCA release. Highlights include an excellent studio version of A Thousand Miles From Home only available as a live version on Live At Antone’s and the epic Take Me Down which is a bit of a departure from Joe’s normal style.

These sessions give a big boost to Ely’s reputation as a singer-songwriter. Although 12 songs here remain unreleased in this form, they are far from throwaways or leftovers. As a singer, he was 45 when he recorded these songs, much older than when he toured with The Clash in ‘77, you can tell he has learnt a lot about life and on the road. It’s not a weary voice, he’s still excitable for a fortysomething.

In an interview with Ely in the LA Times from last year, he made it clear he has led a satisfied life. He remembers an experience back in 1966 when a club manager pulled a gun on him on account of his quitting the club.

“When I came back the next day to get my stuff and my paycheck, the manager pulled a gun on me. I’d never had that experience before. Right at that moment, somebody else came in the side door, so I dove and hit the front door running,” Ely recalled. He then fled Texas with his 65-pound heavy Fender Super Reverb amplifier to LA.

Ely revels in story telling. That’s his greatest gift.
