Post Description
There aren’t enough singers accompanying Leah Abramson on the majority of Late Riser, due May 14, making it more of an early falterer. Her own pipes are adequately sweet with hints of sad-sackery — a lesser version of Sarah Harmer — but not necessarily strong, emotive or distinctive enough to carry this 11-song folk-pop album. Abrahamson needs the cushions of extra vocal layers to achieve sonic liftoff — whether she’s singing with bandmates or to multiple tracks of her own warbles as on Liftoff Canon. It’s one of the few exquisite numbers on the album — Lucien Durey’s staccato chants surround an echoey choir of Abramson’s bright, naive melodies. It’s also the second track on Late Riser, followed by several with minimal vocal fluffery — a dusting of harmonies on Jack of Diamonds, Fight or Flight, and Deja Vu. The full force of this Vancouver group doesn’t emerge until the last 50 seconds of the last track, Red River Valley, a wistful organ and violin ditty — offering a fleeting and frustrating glimpse of Late Riser’s true potential
