On 9 October 2002, Northwest Airlines Flight 85's 747 is cruising 35,000 feet above the Bering Sea before the lower rudder suddenly deflects to the left. The four pilots must divert their plane and make an emergency landing in Anchorage, Alaska. No one is hurt or killed in the incident. The cause is later attributed to a fatigue failure of the rudder hydraulic system.
