Mozart - Horn concertos Nos 1-4 - Karl Böhm [Deutsche Gramophone 1995]
Wiener Philharmoniker - Karl Böhm / Gunter Hogner, horn
I am not normally among those who sing Karl Bohm's praises as an interpreter of Mozart. I have heard many of his recordings over the years, and almost always found myself preferring something else -- usually involving Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the Fields. This CD is an exception. Tempos in the outer movements of the concertos are lively; the second movements are leisurely without being lethargic. Bohm keeps the Vienna Philharmonic suitably restrained when the soloist is playing, but lets them rip when they have the spotlight. A throughly enjoyable album.
