The series revolved around Dexter, a ten-year-old boy genius who had a secret laboratory (which he pronounced with a stress on the second syllable) filled with highly advanced equipment hidden behind a bookshelf in his bedroom. Access to this never-ending laboratory was usually achieved by speaking various passwords or by activating hidden switches on his bookcase (such as having pulled out a specific book). Dexter was normally in conflict with his ditzy older sister, Dee Dee, who always mysteriously gained access to his lab no matter what he did to try and keep her out. Dee Dee eluded all manner of security and, once inside, delighted in playing in the lab, often destroying his creations. Despite her hyperactive personality, Dee Dee sometimes made more logical decisions than Dexter, or even gave him helpful advice. Dexter, though highly intelligent, often failed at what he had set out to do when he became overexcited and made careless choices. He managed to keep the lab a secret from his clueless, cheerful parents, who amusingly never noticed any evidence of the laboratory, even when it was right before their eyes. Dexter also had a Russian accent, despite having been from a typical all-American family.
