Country singer Charlie Louvin dies at 83WARTRICE, Tenn., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Country singer Charlie Louvin, who inspired generations of musicians across genres, died Wednesday in his Wartrice, Tenn., home at age 83, a friend said.Michael Manning, a friend who produced Louvin's final recording, "Back When We Were Young," released last year, said the cause was complications of pancreatic cancer, The New York Times reported.Louvin, born Charlie Elzer Loudermilk, was best known as half of the Louvin Brothers duo, which modernized the tight harmony of Depression-era acts such as the Blue Sky Boys and the Delmore Brothers, and influenced groups such as the Everly Brothers and the Byrds, the Times said.Louvin and his brother, Ira, who died in an automobile accident in 1965, were proponents of the lonesome sound that emerged from the southern Appalachian Mountains, where they were reared, the Times said.The Louvins' popularity of the 1950s faded in the '60s, and the duo dissolved in 1963 and pursued solo careers.By the 1970s, Louvin was known primarily as a star of the Grand Ole Opry, when a new generation of rockers, including Raconteurs and Cake, took up his music, the Times said. The Louvin Brothers were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
