From 1971-1987, The Old Grey Whistle Test was a rock institution in the U.K. Across the country, music fans would flock to their TV"s on Tuesday nights to see the hottest new artists make their U.K. television debuts. Elton John, Bob Marley, The Police, The Ramones, REM and U2 all performed on The Old Grey Whistle Test long before they became the legends they are today. Of course, The Old Grey Whistle Test also featured established superstars, including remarkable performances by John Lennon in 1975 and Bruce Springsteen in 1979 and interviews with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Robert Plant!
The Old Grey Whistle Test takes its name from the days of Tin Pan Alley. Music publishers would play the latest songs for the doormen, messengers and porters, a group collectively called "The Old Greys". If the tune could be whistled back after 2 or 3 hearings, it passed the "Old Grey Whistle Test", and they knew they had a hit.
