GESTALT ET JIVE was a multinational avant progressive rock band founded in West Germany by multi-instrumentalist Alfred Harth, who recruited keyboardist Steve BERESFORD (from the UK), drummer Anton FIER (from the US), percussionist Peter HOLLINGER (from West Germany), bassist Ferdinard RICHARD (from France), and drummer Uwe SCHMITT (from West Germany) in 1984. The band continued the idea of fusing punk rock, free jazz, and classical music into an innovative and engaging new sound. The band released two albums in their short timespan, Nouvelle Cuisine in 1985, and Gestalt et Jive in 1986.
