Coming home from Mecca, young Darwis (Ehsan Taroreh) changed his name in o Ahmad Dahlan. A 21 years old young man who agitated for the implementation of Islamic law that deviated in the direction of bid'ah.
Through his Mosque, Ahmad Dahlan (Lukman Sardi) started the movement to change the direction of Kaba at the Great Mosque of Kauman that angers tradition keeper Kyai Penghulu Kamaludiningrat (Slamet Rahardjo) so that the Ahmad Dahlan mosque was torn down. Ahmad Dahlan was also accused being a disbeliever just because he opened a School that places the students sitting in a chair like a Dutch modern School.

Ahmad Dahlan was also accused as kyai "Kejawen" just because he only has a close relationship with the Javanese intellectual in Budi Utomo. Accompanied by his wife, Siti Walidah (Zaskia Adya Mecca) and five faithful students: Sudja (Giring Nidji), Sangidu (Ricky Prime), Fahrudin (Mario Irwinsyah), Hisham (Dennis Adishwara) and Dirjo (Abdurrahman Arif), Ahmad Dahlan formed an organization called Muhammadiyah with the aim to educate forward-thinking Muslims in accordance with the times.

"Sang Pencerah" won seven trophies at the Hanung Bramantyo Bandung Film Festival 2011 beating other film like "3 Doa 2 Dunia 1 Cinta", "Alangkah Lucunya Negeri Ini" and "Minggu Pagi di Victoria Park".
