Post Description
For the craving for a side project, and a group of "Transatlantic" the musicians of "Dream Theater" has long been observed can be attributed to one of them. The idea of creating the team belonged barabanschiku- "theatergoers" Mike Portnoy, who wanted to bring to the cause of vocalist-keyboardist "Spock's Beard" Neal Morse and guitarist Jim Mateos of "Fates Warning". But if Morse agreed to participate in the project without difficulty, from the Mateos problems, and Mike Neal had to look for other partners. The first candidate was the guitarist of "The Flower Kings" Roine Stolt, with which Morse met in 1997 on the "Progfeste" and has since maintained a correspondence with him. While Neal agreed with Roine, Mike seduced his superproject Pete Treveyvasa, whose group "Marillion" he really liked.
The resulting quartet originally intended to be called "Second Nature", but then with the filing of a longtime friend Roine, Per Nordin, the band settled on the name "Transatlantic" , symbolize the geographic dispersion of team members. In the summer of 1999, the magnificent four gathered in New York to record their debut album.
Each of the musicians brought with him some ideas, but it turned out to be the most creative companion Neal Morse. He wrote almost all the lyrics, and became the organizer of the whole creative process. Sami session held in "Millbrook Studios", where Taylor previously recorded with another project, "Liquid Tension Experiment". Producer functions divided between the team members, as made by the owner of the studio sound engineer Paul Orofino and mixing trusted Rich Mauser, who had the honor to work on a number of albums, "Spock's Beard". The main part of the disk was own material "Transatlantic", but the last track ( "In Held (Twas) In I") was a cover of "Procol Harum". Overall impression of the album with lots of passages organ "Hammond" and heavy, fast drum prog rhythms expressed Morse, called the work a mixture of "Marillion", "Flower Kings" , "Spock's Beard" and "Dream Theater".
However, not only these groups were responsible for the sounding of "SMPTe" - on the album felt the influence of classic rock bands: "Pink Floyd", "Yes ", "Genesis", "King Crimson", "Steely Dan", "Beatles". It was interesting to chosen records the name - it is not only constituted the initials of the project participants, but also meant the machine protocol used in hi-end studio.
The album, released in the beginning of 2000, has caused the enthusiastic reaction of progressive critics as "Transatlantic", meanwhile, moved on a tour of America. At the end of the tour was released on Double Live "Live In America", which included two more covers of: Beatles "Strawberry Fields Forever" and a medley of "Genesis". In early 2001, the team took up the preparation of the second studio album, "Bridge Across Forever". At this time, Morse refused dominant roles and creativity "Transatlantic" was of a collective character. Another difference was that if present on previous work only one long (31 minute) composition, "Bridge Across Forever" included three epic (26, 14 and 26 minutes). The CD was released in October 2001, and later the group held a European tour. Subsequently, based on the tour live album "Live In Europe" was released, completing the first chapter of "transatlantic" stories. Morse went on a religious path, and in connection with this activity the group was stopped.
Only after six years Neil has reunited with his colleagues, and the "Transatlantic" took on a new album. The CD "The Whirlwind" contained only one song, which lasted 78 minutes (though for the convenience of students it is still divided into 12 parts). In addition to the influence of the main groups of participants in the project are met analogy with the "Beatles" and "ELP", but this only increased the enthusiastic press response. The limited edition "The Whirlwind" was accompanied by another CD, composed by half of the original things, half of the covers. In 2010, in support of the album, the team conducted a European-American tour, after which came to light two live.
