The storyline was left unfinished after episode 8 due to a massive falling-out between production companies ARTMIC and Youmex. Although Bubblegum Crash was released as a sequel, porduced by Artmix, it had practically no references to what happened at the end of this series.
It did however contain elements that were meant to be part/ending of the planned 13 episode storyline of the original OVA. Youmex decided to sue Artmix over it, thus effectively putting the entire franchise on ice for a long time...
Bubblegum Crisis didn"t do particularly well in Japan, however it gained notable popularity in the west, and was noted for being among the first uncensored/subtitled anime titles released in North America...
Summary (ANN)
In the near future, Tokyo was left flattened as a result from a great earthquake. A new city, MegaTokyo, was then recreated due in no small part from the aid of a multi-million dollar company, Genom Corp. Genom created and mass-produced biomechanical creatures called Boomers to aid in the restoration of MegaTokyo. When the Boomers began to run out of control, the ADPolice at first tried to stop them, but they proved to be far more difficult to deal with than was first imagined. Under the ever looming Boomer threat, a group of four girls from varying degrees of society banded together. Calling themselves The Knight Sabers, they were the only ones with enough firepower and resourcefullness to defend the fledgling MegaTokyo from Genom and it"s berserk Boomers.
Summary (AniDB)
The year is 2033, and Mega-Tokyo is just beginning recover from a devastating earthquake that completely rearranged the face of Tokyo. Part of the recovery is due to the recent advancement in Boomer technology. Boomers are androids that look, think, and act almost like human beings. They can be put to work, perform as soldiers in the military, or go berserk and terrorise the population.
The corporation responsible for all the major Boomer advancements is a monolithic company called GENOM, whose power seems to grow with every passing moment. But GENOM has a rather underhanded secret agenda — to take over the world, of course. With the world dependant on Boomer technology, there does not seem to be much that can resist its power.
Enter the Knight Sabres. This mercenary team of four young women equipped with hardsuits has the firepower and the courage to stand up to rampaging Boomers and the company behind them. Knight Sabers, sanjo!
