Holst Planets Boult New Philharmonia HD

Fascinating is perhaps the best word to describe this performance and expansion of Holst's famous and popular work, commissioned to add Pluto to the planetary overtures. Coincidentally, Pluto's demotion from planetary status coincided with the completion of this Colin Matthews composition, well performed by the Berliner Plilharmoniker.

Most of the performance of this suite, while inspiring, is familiar, but when we meet "Neptune, the Mystic," instead of Holst's protracted fade of the choir (admittedly, one of the most thrilling parts of the original, especially when properly performed as Holst intended), the choir encourages us on past Neptune's orbit, where we encounter "Pluto, the Renewer."
