Canadian Navy Centennial (2010)
The roles, missions, and operations of the Canadian Navy as defined by the Canada First Defence Strategy, are extensive and varied. While generally allocated among three major roles - Defending Canada, Defending North America, Contributing to International Peace and Security - they also can be summed up by one word: multitasking. Every ship in the fleet, no matter its primary responsibility, leaves port with the crew well aware they may be called upon to "switch hats" one or more times before returning home - and properly trained to respond. It is a mission set and mindset that ranges from law enforcement and international treaties compliance patrols within Canada"s exclusive economic zone at sea to commanding naval joint task forces in the Persian Gulf or off the coasts of Africa - some in support of military operations in Southwest Asia, others to combat maritime smuggling and piracy.
