Fast arcade-style racing returns to the PlayStation in RAGE RACER, the sequel to the popular RIDGE RACER. Players choose a car then head out to the track. After notching a few wins and earning some credits, the car can be upgraded to improve its performance or another car can be purchased. There are a total of five upgrades for each car, meaning any slow-moving vehicle can be upgraded to a speed monster. A new class system has been implemented to divide the races: each class has a certain number of cars that qualify for the three or four races within the class. Each car can also be customized, from body color to the logo on the hood, using preset graphics or a custom graphic that the player designs using the built-in editor.
