The Hobbit:
Gandalf tricks Bilbo into hosting a party for Thorin and his band of dwarves, who sing of reclaiming the Lonely Mountain and its vast treasure from the dragon Smaug. When the music ends, Gandalf unveils a map showing a secret door into the Mountain and proposes that the dumbfounded Bilbo serve as the expedition's "burglar". The dwarves ridicule the idea, but Bilbo, indignant, joins in spite of himself.

The Lord of the Rings:
De hoofdpersoon, de Hobbit Frodo Balings, krijgt van zijn oom Bilbo Balings een gouden ring. Dit blijkt een ring te zijn die grote macht in zich draagt, gesmeed door Sauron. Sauron, die al het kwade in Midden-aarde vertegenwoordigt, kan alleen verslagen worden door de Ring te vernietigen. De enige plaats waar dit gedaan kan worden is het vuur van de Doemberg, waar de Ring ook door Sauron gesmeed werd.
