Rock and roll was once a young and untamed beast. It made teenage kids quit work, rip up movie theater seats, and run around the block naked. This was in the '50s, an era normally associated with sock hops and picket fences. Only a music made of primal energy, a manic concoction of lust, gibberish and thumping beats, could be responsible for leading an entire nation's young astray. Gene Vincent's drummer screams suddenly, for no apparent reason. Duane Eddy rips at his guitar as if he's just found what his fingers were for. And when Bill Riley barks "My gal is red hot," sock hops are nothing more than a quaint memory.
