Put guitarist Tony Iommi, Ronnie James Dio , Geezer Butler and Vinnie Appice on one stage and no matter what it gets called, it is Black Sabbath, Part Two Dio, rail thin, balding unattractively and wearing a sequined silver top, still packs vocal power into the higher registers, stays on key and stays focused. Iommi is still the one metal icon with taste and a sense of dynamics in a solo. He takes his position at stage left - just in front of the wrought iron and brick fence that surrounds the drums -- and rarely moves; there is no posturing in this band, and as metal goes, the music is strong enough to speak for itself. More than other reunions of '70s and '80s bands, these pot-bellied, beer-drinking fans aren't so much reliving their youth as they are hailing the return of heroes. To be a Sabbath fan, back in the day, meant to embrace a lifestyle...and by god nearly 15,000 people came to the Forum to pump their fists and celebrate this music as living and breathing, not as a relic of their youth.
