Het spel speelt zich af tijdens de Derde Kruistocht in de middeleeuwen. De speler kruipt in de huid van een lid van het genootschap van Assassijnen, namelijk Altaïr (Arabisch voor 'de vogel') is. De speler is in staat te reizen door drie steden: Jeruzalem, Acre en Damascus. Altaïr, een te schande gemaakte moordenaar, probeert in zijn queeste zijn oude status bij de Assassijnen terug te krijgen.
