Het album waarop U2 zichzelf opnieuw uitvond. Techno-invloeden wezen de nieuwe richting aan, er werden loops gebruikt, gitaren klonken niet als gitaren. Het was in die tijd nog allemaal zeer nieuw - vandaag de dag verrast het ons nog nauwelijks. Een song als "One" is zelfs een klassieke ballad, maar het was wel die song, die het voortbestaan van de band verzekerde.
