ULTRAVIOLET HIPPOPOTAMUS [prog][musicrequest]

US band ULTRAVIOLET HIPPOPOTAMUS was formed in the spring of 2004 when a few friends from Big Rapids (Michigan) started jamming together. The friends in question, Brian Samuels, Travis Compton, Sam Guidry, Cameron Rye and Joe Phillion, soon had a set of covers ready to be performed live, and the occasional song of their own made the odd appearance on stage too. They also stumbled upon a name, giving life to the until then fictional only group Ultraviolet Hippopotamus.

Following a year of actively performing live the fivesome decided that it was time to record their material, at that point music in demand from their audience. The end result became their debut album Background Music, which was released in 2006. Just as this production was about to be released Cameron Rye decided to call it quits, and when they hit the stage again it was with a new man handling the tangents: Nate Karnes. And as their presence was ever increasing at friendly venues in Michigan and Indiana, the band expanded in size as well as scope with the addition of Casey Butts as a full time percussionist. As the now 6 man strong ensemble honed their craft, the demands of their performances and compositions started to hit the technical limitations of founding member Travis Compton. He and the band went their separate ways eventually, with Russel James brought in as his replacement.

At this point in the band history the calendar has switched to 2008, a year that saw this revised version of the band releasing their second album Songs for the Reaper in February. Which was followed by another bout of hectic touring, friendly venues in Illinois and Ohio added to their schedule in addition to the by now familiar stages in Michigan and Indiana. A few months into their new bout of hectic touring tangents man Nate Karnes decided that he needed a change. New man Dave Sanders was brought in, settling in and learning the band's repertoire alongside departing member Karnes, the band briefly expanding to a seven man unit in this transitional phase.

By the end of 2010 Ultraviolet Hippopotamus had established themselves as a popular act in the jam band circuit, expanding their repertoire with reworked versions of material from Sanders former band and also reworking their older material to suit their new tangents man more refined performance. A new album was well on the way too. But in the middle of this growing success, founding guitarist Sam Guidy called it quits, the strain of spending so much time away from his loved ones becoming to hard to master. New Years Eve 2010 marked his last performance, which was also their last ever show as a 6 man strong band, the remaining members opting to continue on as a 5-piece rather than trying to find a replacement.

March 2011 saw the release of their third album Square Pegs Round Holes, their most recent effort to date. Since then Ultraviolet Hippopotamus has continued being an active presence on a number of friendly US venues, ever expanding their reach and popularity.
